Credit Unions, League Host Meeting With Longtime CU Champion Rep. Gerry Connolly

Authored By: CeJae Vtipilson on 5/2/2023

Credit union advocates joined the League on Monday for a virtual meeting with longtime credit union supporter, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11th).

Special thanks to Apple Federal Credit Union, Arlington Community Federal Credit Union, CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union, InFirst Federal Credit Union, NavyFed, Nextmark Credit Union and Northwest Federal Credit Union for participating.

During the meeting, the credit union leaders discussed the work they are doing to serve their members and communities, continuing to highlight the credit union difference in light of the recent bank failures. From financial literacy initiatives to serving the underserved, Congressman Connolly fully understands the credit union difference.

As a steadfast champion for Virginia’s credit unions with the “battle scars” from the bankers to prove it, Rep. Connolly reiterated his support of the credit union system and its core philosophies. He encouraged credit unions to advocate strategically to combat the increasing attacks and deep pockets of the banking lobby. He warned that without strong credit union advocacy banks and their allies will continue to block efforts to increase credit union powers and may even begin to chip away at what we have fought so hard to gain.

League President/CEO Carrie Hunt discussed our federal legislative priorities including expanding access to serve the underserved, protecting credit card interchange, and fighting back against the CFPB’s war on what they deem “junk fees.” Congressman Connolly concluded the meeting by asking us to continue to keep his office informed should bills be presented on any of the issues we are watching so he can work proactively on them. We thank the credit union advocates who joined us in our meeting with Rep. Connolly and we look forward to our meeting on Thursday with Congressman Rob Wittman (R-01).
