Jennifer McClellan, the favorite in the race to win Virginia’s 4th Congressional District seat. Voters go to the polls next Tuesday (Feb. 21) to decide the race between McClellan and Republican Leon Benjamin.

“This was an opportunity for credit unions to share the ‘Credit Union Difference’ with the senator and showcase their good work in serving credit union members in the 4th Congressional District,” said Chief Advocacy Officer JT Blau. “We were also pleased to hear that the senator remains a committed champion of Community Development Financial Institutions, a priority for your League.”

The General Assembly is considering legislation (SB1320) that codifies the Virginia Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, originally created in the 2021 Appropriation Act, and establishes the Virginia Community Development Financial Institutions Program to carry out the purposes of the Fund. It was introduced by McClellan and Sen. Dave Marsden. The measure has enjoyed broad support, reporting out of the House Appropriation Committee on a unanimous vote. Your League testified in favor of the measure when it was before the Senate’s General Laws and Technology Committee.

The senator also noted that she’s a proud member of the Virginia State University Federal Credit Union, where she received her first car loan. She worked closely with the League during her service in the House, where she served what was then called the Commerce and Labor Committee, the key committee for credit union and financial services legislation.

Joining League representatives Carrie Hunt, JT Blau and CeJae Vtipilson on the call were representatives from ABNB Federal Credit Union, Argent Credit Union, Bronco Federal Credit Union, Chartway Credit Union, Homebase Credit Union, Langley Federal Credit Union, Peoples Advantage Federal Credit Union and Virginia Credit Union. CUNA representatives also joined us on the call.
