League Readies for 2024 General Assembly Following Eventful Election

11/8/2023

The 2023 election and over and mercifully so are the political ads.

Democrats have held the Senate and have flipped the House of Delegates, holding at least 21 seats in the Senate and 51 in the House. One race in both the Senate and House are still too close to call and may result in recounts, but regardless of these outcomes Democrats will control both chambers in January.

This outcome is a major blow to Gov. Youngkin and his agenda. It can only be taken as a statement that the public, while still supportive of the Governor, does not trust him or his fellow Republicans with unchecked power in Richmond. The Governor’s remaining time in office will undoubtedly be spent battling Democrats with both sides finding it difficult to enact their desired legislation.

Along with Democratic control of both chambers, we have 17 new members of the Senate and 34 new members of the House.  The League has already met with many of these newly elected members to educate on the credit union difference. These discussions have been very positive, as many of our new lawmakers are already credit union members themselves. The League will be attending events and setting up meetings with the newly elected legislators to elaborate on the credit union difference and outlining our legislative priorities.

With Democrats winning control of the House, we will see a realignment of power with Delegate Don Scott (88th-Portsmouth) likely serving as the new Speaker. Committees will also look very different with Democrat majorities and new Chairs.  The Republican minority may also take the opportunity to make leadership changes in the wake of last night’s defeat.

Below is the list of candidates who won last night, which races the League supported with contributions from VACUPAC, and those for whom we have remaining contributions.
