League Pleased That Lawmakers Appear Near on Deals to Fund the Federal Government

3/6/2024

The House is expected to pass a package of six spending bills to fund a major swath of the federal government and avoid a partial government shutdown this weekend. This will set the stage for final negotiations over the rest of the year’s budget after months of political wrangling. The Senate is expected to vote by the end of the week.

In our meetings on Capitol Hill this week, we are highlighting the impact of government shutdowns on credit unions and their members and urging our Congressional delegation to fund the government.

"The continued uncertainty related to funding the federal government causes hardships for both citizens and businesses," notes League Chief Advocacy Officer JT Blau. "Government shutdowns, even partial shutdowns, upend the lives of countless Virginians and threaten families' financial security. And while credit unions stand ready to assist members in times of need by covering payroll, waiving fees, extending payments, or providing low- or no-interest loans, we have urged lawmakers to avoid such shutdowns because of the harm they inflict on credit union members, the regional economy, and credit unions themselves."
