Hampton Roads Educators Celebrates 70 years of Service

3/22/2024

March 21, 2024, Hampton Roads Educators Credit Union held its annual meeting celebrating 70 years of service to their members in the Hampton Roads/Peninsula communities. Chartered on March 10th, 1954, Hampton Roads Educators Credit Union was the vision of Mrs. Laura Twyford to provide financial services to educators and their families in Hampton Roads. Mrs. Twyford served on the credit union board for nearly 23 years and was the first elected female member of the Virginia Credit Union League Board.

No matter how big or how small, credit unions play a vital role in the communities they serve and Hampton Roads Educators Credit Union has played an integral role in the lives of their members. Starting in a broom closet, serving members from the trunk of a car, and since 1989, from their current location on Cunningham Drive, their mission of commitment to offering financial solutions that make a difference in their members' lives has remained unchanged. The Virginia Credit Union League congratulates Karen Orie and her staff on 70 years of service in helping members achieve financial well-being and standing as a testament to the credit union difference of people helping people.

This celebration is the first in-person annual meeting in 4 years and was attended by nearly 200 staff, past and present, board members past and present, members, and local elected officials. The event was held at the Liberty Live Church location on Big Bethel Road in Hampton, Virginia.
