HAMPTON, VIRGINIA (December 13, 2021) – Hampton Roads Educators Credit Union (HRECU) received national recognition as a 2021 recipient of the Credit Union National Association’s (CUNA) Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award and the Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award. State Leagues across the nation selected winners in various asset sizes, and these League winners were then considered for the national awards.

HRECU won Second Place in the Louise Herring Exceptional Member Service Award for their newly created COVID-19 Loan Payment Relief Program. The program assisted members with their loan payments; we were able to both defer payments as well as make loan payments for them which extended their due dates up to 90 days. Members had unexpectedly lost their job, or their income was suddenly reduced due to the COVID-19 shut-down of schools. The credit union serves 8 school systems on the Peninsula and Middle Peninsula.

In the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award category, HRECU won Honorable Mention for their Shred Day Event that combined identity protection through document shredding while collecting food and monetary donations for the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. More than 3,600 pounds of documents were shredded for recycling and more than 690 pounds of food plus $759 in monetary donations were collected on behalf of the VA Peninsula Foodbank.

“Congratulations to the 2021 award winners for their outstanding accomplishments. We celebrate the work that each institution has done to promote financial well-being within their respective communities. Each award recipient represents the spirit of what credit unions are all about – people helping people,” stated CUNA CEO Jim Nussle.
