Hampton Roads Educators' CU, Windsor High School Celebrate Grand Opening of Student-Run Branch

Windsor, VA – Hampton Roads Educators’ Credit Union (HRECU) and Isle of Wight County Schools have teamed up to open their first student-run credit union branch. A grand opening was held on Friday, October 30, 2009, to celebrate and commemorate the event.
The Blue’s Gold Student Branch, a play on the school’s colors, has encouraged the involvement of the entire student body by allowing them to submit ideas and vote on the branch’s name as well as its logo. The student run credit union serves as a gateway between the school’s financial education classes and that essential hands-on experience of responsibly managing one’s account, balancing a checkbook and other much needed tools for a successful financial future.
The program works in conjunction with the business department to allow students to operate the in-school branch, holding such positions as teller, manager, and marketer, while earning classroom credit. Blue’s Gold branch is open Tuesdays and Thursdays during the lunch periods and provides services to only the students, staff and faculty of Windsor High School.
“We are very excited about this opportunity to help prepare the students to manage their finances and establish successful financial habits early-on,” stated Marketing Coordinator, Stephanie Adams. In addition to the student run branch, the credit union will also provide classroom presentations and the free financial literacy curriculum by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE).
