CU Day Events Kick Off Jan. 24

We're looking forward to a busy couple of weeks, starting next Tuesday (Jan. 24) as the Hampton Roads, Piedmont, Southside and Tidewater chapters travel to Richmond for their Credit Union Day at the General Assembly events.

The Central Virginia Chapter visits lawmakers on Wednesday (Jan. 25), followed by the Roanoke Valley and Southwestern Virginia chapters (Jan. 31), the Richmond Chapter (Feb. 1) and the NoVa Chapter (Feb. 8). Contact your League Governmental Affairs Committee members and Chapter Legislative Representatives --listed here or on your Chapter's webpage -- for details.

> League Director of Governmental Affairs Karin Sherbin is helping coordinate logistics, so feel free to direct questions to her as well - ksherbin@vacul.org.

CU Day Resources:

Dear GAC Chapter representatives:

Attached you will find background information for your CU Days. The attachment of most immediate concern is the talking points for advocates. Please share that with all the participants attending your chapter's CU Days.

The very last attachment, the contact report, should be shared with the leaders of each visit, if not everyone. We need to get contact reports back so we know who was visited and whether there is a need for followup.

Also attached are the information sheets that are going into the legislators packets. You do not have to make the legislators' packets, the League is doing that. If you want to share the background information we are providing lawmakers with your attendees that is fine. If you have a big group and you know a lot of them don't want to get into details, then use your discretion.

As of now our CU bill is sailing through. Both the House and Senate Commerce and Labor committees have approved H.B. 214 and S.B. 132, the bills that would allow state-chartered credit unions to adopt standard bylaw procedures without BFI approval; this would NOT include FOM changes. We will undoubtedly have updates next week on where the bills stand on the floor of their respective chamber (i.e., first reading, second reading .... maybe even a floor vote).

I think the talking points are self-explanatory but if I am wrong let me know and ask me questions! If you see anything glaringly wrong in the attached information, like a weird typo that got past us, let me know ASAP.

Here are the attachments we  have for CU Day legislative packets:

1. Foreclosure
2. Preventing Financial Elder Abuse
3. Garnishment and Homestead Exemptions
4. Financial Literacy
5. Financial Literacy pdf (report on Virginia credit unions' efforts) (pdf, 35kb)
6. Talking Points

7. Impact Report: Credit Unions Make A Difference for Virginia's Families (pdf, 548kb)

We will also include the PZC  numbers for each legislator in his/her packet.

SCARVES:  We will provide scarves for the legislators. We did not order new ones this year due to us having leftovers from past years to cover the lawmakers. Please bring your scarf from a previous visit. We will have a few extra on hand to give to people who never had a scarf or who may have misplaced this precious commodity.

There will be League staff as well as lobbyists from Hunton & Williams to accompany the advocates to their meetings. If advocates want to take the lead in the meeting, that is fine. If you are more comfortable with a League or Hunton person getting the ball rolling, let us know.

At least one League staff member will be waiting for your group in the lobby of the General Assembly Building 15 minutes before your scheduled first meeting. If you need to contact us the morning of the day, please call me at 434.238.5468.

Thank you again for working with your fellow chapter members to make this event happen. It takes a lot of effort but it is one of the premier ways we can build our relationships and make an impact in Richmond. Go team!
