Who We Are

The Virginia Credit Union League is the statewide trade association representing the 190-plus member-owned, not-for-profit credit unions headquartered in the Commonwealth.

Organized in 1934 and headquartered in Lynchburg, the League is the voice of Virginia’s credit unions and works to ensure the fulfillment of our affiliates’ vision for a thriving credit union movement.

Combined membership	7 million Note: Many of Virginia's credit unions, especially our military credit unions, have operations beyond the Commonwealth, so the 6.95 million member figure is inflated. Best estimates place actual Virginia-resident credit union membership at about 3 million.
Combined assets	$81.8 billion
Loan portfolios (Total loans)	$56.3 billion
Average Credit Union Asset Size	$431 million
Credit Union Structure	- 16.8 percent are federally-chartered single-sponsor credit unions - 15.8 percent are federally-chartered community credit unions - 41.6 percent are federally chartered multiple-common-bond credit unions - Remaining 25.8 percent are state-chartered credit unions (single sponsor, multiple common-bond and community charters)
