CUNA, Leagues Press Credit Union Issues with State Legislators

CUNA and several state leagues participated in national meetings of state legislators this summer; ensuring that credit union interests were advanced and protected. Promoting the milestone of 100 million memberships was a key component of our advocacy work at the annual Legislative Summit of the National Conference of State Legislatures in Minneapolis, Minn., and the annual meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) in Dallas, Texas.

CUNA and league staff met hundreds of state legislators and their staffs during policymaking committee meetings at both events and more informally in the exhibit halls and other meeting events. At the ALEC meeting, for example, staff with the Cornerstone Credit Union Foundation spoke to a gathering of attendees on the role that credit unions play delivering financial education to the communities they serve.

It’s also interesting to note that since about half of the current members of the U.S. Congress are former state legislators, the relationships built at these and other state-level policy meetings can develop into valuable long-term relationships at the federal level.
