(Richmond, VA – September 23, 2013) -- Virginia Credit Union has won a technology award for its online membership opening process.

The Excellence in Technology Awards are being presented this week at an annual CUNA Technology Conference.

After being implemented in July 2012, VACU’s online membership opening surpassed the credit union’s largest branch as the top channel for new members.  Since the application became available, more than 4,000 members have joined online.

“The online membership program has streamlined the process for new members to apply for credit cards, car loans, mortgages, home loans, and other products and led to significant loan growth for VACU,” said Christopher Saneda, Virginia Credit Union’s Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer.

VACU’s team built the application entirely in-house after evaluating several vendor-designed solutions.

Members who join online can establish new accounts, apply for loans, and choose account preferences, all during their first online session.

A member-owned financial cooperative with more than 225,000 members and $2.5 billion in assets, Virginia Credit Union provides a variety of affordable banking services, loans and mortgages, checking and savings services, and financial education resources. Virginia Credit Union is an equal housing opportunity lender and is federally insured by NCUA. For more information, visit www.vacu.org.
