Fort Lee Federal Credit Union Announces 2013 Scholarship Winners

Each year Fort Lee FCU proudly sponsors the Fort Lee Federal Credit Union Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships to four graduating seniors within its membership. Qualified students submitted applications and were anonymously judged on academic merit, personal achievements, demonstrated leadership experience, extra-curricular involvement and/or work experience. The Credit Union is proud to announce our 2013 winners, who will receive a total of $2,500 in scholarship funds.

June 6, 2013, Prince George, VA - Each year Fort Lee FCU proudly sponsors the Fort Lee Federal Credit Union Scholarship Program, which awards scholarships to four graduating seniors within its membership. Qualified students submitted applications and were anonymously judged on academic merit, personal achievements, demonstrated leadership experience, extra-curricular involvement and/or work experience. The Credit Union is proud to announce our 2013 winners:

Matthew Schneck, $1,000 William Zeiner Scholarship Recipient

A graduating senior at Prince George High School, Mr. Schneck plans to study Biomedical Engineering.

Throughout his high school tenure, Mr. Schneck has maintained a straight-A average while taking multiple AP, Honors and dual-enrollment college courses. He has held numerous membership and leadership roles throughout high school including, but not limited to: State President of the Virginia Student Council Association, School President and Class Vice President of the Student Government Association, State Delegate for the National Association of Student Councils, Board Member of the District Crime Solvers Student Board, Captain of the Varsity Soccer Team, and member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society.

Mr. Shneck is also an Eagle Scout and Lifeguard. His internships at local hospitals to shadow surgeons and physicians have guided his decision to become a surgeon.

Elizabeth Hopkins, $500 Scholarship Recipient

Miss Hopkins, a graduating senior at Prince George High School as well, plans to major in Education and a minor in Youth Ministry. She has taken multiple Honors and Dual Enrollment classes. Throughout her high school years, Miss Hopkins has been member of the Wood-Dale Swim Team, JV Girls Soccer, JV Field Hockey, JV and Varsity Field Hockey, Mathematics Honor Society, BETA Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Cultural Awareness Club. She was the Manager for JV and Varsity Wrestling, Youth Leader for the First Baptist Church of Hopewell Youth Team and Advertisement Editor and Business Manager for the Prince George High School Peerage Yearbook Staff. Outside of school and church involvement, Miss Hopkins is a part-time nanny for four children ages six to nine. Following college, she plans to begin her career as a Youth Minister.

Tayla Smith, $500 Scholarship Recipient

Also graduating from Prince George High School, Miss Smith will attend Old Dominion University and study Accounting. A successful student with several Honors and Dual-Enrollment classes, Miss Smith is also very active in extra-curricular and community activities. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Math National Honor Society, BETA Club, DECA Club, Art Club, Future Business Leaders of America, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She was President of the 4 H Club, National Chairperson and Military Liaison for 4 Southeast Region, President of the Junior Civitan Club and Captain of the Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team. Miss Smith also works part-time as a Service Representative for Pizza Hut. Her career goal is to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Kelsey Dowling, $500 Scholarship Recipient

A graduating senior at Thomas Dale High School, Miss Dowling plans to attend Lynchburg College and major in Communications. Throughout her high school tenure, she played JV Field Hockey, JV Track, and JV and Varity Tennis. She is a member of National Honor Society, German National Honor Society, BETA Club, Keyette Club, and the International Thespian’s Society. She is a Sunday school teacher for Pre-K through Kindergarten and a certified AWANA Sparks Leader for tutoring elementary-age children.

Miss Dowling is very active in theater as well; she was cast is several high school productions including Little Shop of Horrors, Arsenic and Lace, Beauty and the Beast and Back to the Dolls House. Miss Dowling plans to use her Communications degree for film or broadcast production and direction.

Scholarship recipients were honored at Fort Lee Federal Credit Union’s annual business meeting and dinner on April 30, 2013. The Credit Union congratulates each of them on their outstanding achievements!
