DuPont Community Credit Union (DCCU) won a 1st Place Award in the state-level Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program for Credit Unions. The Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program, sponsored by the Virginia Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association, honors credit unions for their involvement in community projects and activities.
DCCU raised more than $20,000 and provided 109 volunteer hours to its local United Way organizations. The credit union's donation to the United Way helped a number of United Way partner organizations, including the Community Child Care Center, the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center and the Valley Program for Aging Services.
The credit union used various fundraising projects in reaching its $20,000 donation, including Football Friday, in which employees voluntarily paid into a fund to wear football jerseys, jeans, and sneakers to work and Co-Worker Appreciation Days, which allowed employees to purchase snacks to thank their co-workers.
“A key part of DCCU’s mission is a genuine commitment to our community,” says DCCU President/CEO Gerald Hershey. “We strive to give back to our community in the same way we serve our members every day –with a sincere dedication to affect positive change in people’s lives.”
The competition is named after Dora Maxwell, a credit union pioneer, who worked with several organizations to improve the living standards of the poor and needy.
