WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 24, 2013 – The national charity group, Credit Union Miracle Day (CUMD), elected its new leadership team today. Theresa Mann, President/CEO of The Partnership FCU, Arlington, VA, takes the helm as Chairman. CUMD is a nonprofit collaboration of credit union organizations engaged in fundraising activities to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) and is the largest national credit union fundraising event for Credit Unions for Kids.
“I am proud and honored to serve as Chairman of this successful, collaborative program,” said Mann. “The team really pulls together and works tirelessly for the kids,” she added. Mann served as CUMD’s Vice Chairman and Chairman of the CUMD Marketing Committee for many years. She is also one of the founding members of CUMD.
Immediate past Chairman, Juri Valdov, was lauded by the Board for his 12 years of outstanding volunteer leadership to the organization. Valdov, retired President/CEO of Northwest FCU, will continue to serve on the Board.
“Juri has volunteered countless hours to guide this organization to its nationally-recognized status,” said Mann. “He always kept the mission in focus – to help kids in need. We are forever grateful for his keen vision and fine execution of our goals over the years,” she added.
“It has been a privilege to be associated with such a dedicated group of volunteers,” Valdov said. “Together we made a big difference in the lives of the most vulnerable among us – our children - while highlighting the credit union difference. They said it couldn’t be done, but in those 12 years, we exceeded all expectations.”
Under Valdov’s leadership, CUMD has donated over $6 million for CMN Hospitals across the country since 2002. Valdov accepted one of the top awards in the credit union industry, the Herb Wegner Memorial Award for Outstanding Program, from the National Credit Union Foundation on behalf of CUMD in February 2014. CUMD also won the national Dora Maxwell Award for Outstanding Social Responsibility Program for a Credit Union Group in 2009.
Other executive team members elected include Charlie Mallon, President/CEO of Congressional FCU as Vice Chairman; Jan Roche, President/CEO of State Department FCU as Treasurer; and Diana Dykstra, President/CEO of the California and Nevada Credit Union Leagues as Secretary. All are incumbent board members.
Continuing on the board of directors are Valdov; Fredda McDonald, EVP of PSCU; and Sarah Canepa Bang, President/COO of FSCC, LLC and Chief Strategy Officer, CO-OP Shared Branching.
Three board members who have contributed greatly over the years will be stepping down but continuing to support and serve on committees or in an advisory capacity: Chris McDonald, President/CEO of Northwest FCU; Chris Roe, SVP of CUNA Mutual Group; and Casey Duplantier, retired President/CEO of 1st Advantage FCU.
CUMD started with the 2002 credit union sponsorship of its flagship event, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run® in Washington, D.C. In 2011, CUMD expanded its cause to a Family of Races benefiting CMN Hospitals through Credit Unions for Kids, adding the Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run in Sacramento, Calif., and two Freedom Runs for American troops overseas, including one at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and one at Wiesbaden Army Garrison, Germany, all held on or around the same day.
Although not its primary mission, raising credit unions’ visibility on Capitol Hill is a significant part of the CUMD program. To deepen Capitol Hill involvement, there is a popular Capitol Hill Competition, which represents nearly 800 runners and 56 teams. In 2013, over 160 Members of Congress signed up to serve as Honorary Cherry Blossom Race Chairs, including 23 U.S. Senators and representing 39 states, American Samoa, D.C., Guam and Puerto Rico. The competition is featured in widely read and circulated Capitol Hill publications.
Funds raised by CUMD stay in the credit union's community to benefit the kids served by the local CMN Hospital.
The 2013 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run and Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run drew together 100 credit unions from 14 states, 60 business partner organizations, 16‚000 runners and over 700 volunteers, and raised over $483,000 for CMN Hospitals.
