Over 210 Members Signed on as Honorary Race Chairs

WASHINGTON – March 12, 2014 – The number of Members of Congress supporting the April 6 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run has skyrocketed to a record breaking 210, representing 47 states, American Samoa, D.C. and Guam. The last highest number was 189. Among the legislators are 37 U.S. Senators and Speaker John Boehner.

The Virginia delegation is well-represented on the list of honorary race chairs, with the following lawmakers signed on: Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, as well as Reps. Rob Wittman (R-1st), Scott Rigell (R-2nd), Robert Hurt (R-5th), Frank Wolf (R-10th) and Gerry Connolly (D-11th).

“We are extremely pleased to see such a high level of support from the Hill,” said Charlie Mallon, President/CEO of Congressional FCU, and Vice Chair of the Board of the race title sponsor group, Credit Union Miracle Day. “This race showcases the credit union philosophy of people helping people since one of our major goals is to raise funds for children’s hospitals.”

Credit Union Miracle Day’s Family of Races also includes the Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run in Sacramento, California, and a Freedom Run at Wiesbaden Army Garrison in Germany.

Since becoming the title sponsors of races in 2002, Credit Union Miracle Day, a collaboration of 101 credit unions and 48 business partners and CUSOs, including lead partner PSCU, has donated over $6 million to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country, under the umbrella of Credit Unions for Kids. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is an alliance of premier children’s hospitals which treat 10 million critically ill children annually, regardless of their ability to pay.

Congressional FCU and U.S. Senate FCU sponsor the annual Cherry Blossom Capitol Hill Competition, the race within the larger Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run. House and Senate offices form teams to compete for the Capitol Hill Cup. The team with the best race time wins the cup to display in its office.

“Over 15,000 runners will be participating in what is known as the ‘Runner’s Rite of Spring’ – from world-class athletes to first time runners,” said Mallon. “We are especially proud of our Capitol Hill Competition teams and runners. Nearly 900 congressional staffs are expected to participate in the race.”

The race course is a fast, flat route around the iconic memorials in the nation’s capital.

For the first time, the 2014 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run will host both the USA Track & Field Men’s and Women’s Ten Mile Championships, Presented by America’s Credit Unions.

Credit Union Miracle Day is the 2013 proud recipient of the National Credit Union Foundation’s Outstanding Program Award.

Credit unions and their business partners can still support the Family of Races benefitting Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by becoming a sponsor. Visit www.miracleday.org.
