Virginia Beach, Va. (December 13, 2012) – During this busy time of year, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the hectic days, lengthy to-do lists, and overall hustle and bustle of the season – especially for families with critically ill children. Chartway Federal Credit Union’s We Promise Foundation understands the weight these life events can add to a family so were proud to make a $150,000 donation to Make-A-Wish ® Greater Virginia to make dreams come true for 40 young patients fighting for their lives.
15-year-old Christopher Santos-Palm is one of these children. Currently battling Chordoma, a bone cancer that occurs in the head and spine, Chris has endured many painful and extensive treatments. As a result of this donation, Chris and his family will have the opportunity to experience the dream of a lifetime: a one-week, carefree Caribbean cruise. Describing their appreciation for the special holiday gift, Joy Santos-Palm – Chris’ mom - said, “We are extremely grateful and so excited to go on this trip.”
As Chartway’s charitable arm surprised Chris with the news that his special holiday wish would be coming true, they simultaneously presented a $150,000 donation to Make-A-Wish ® Greater Virginia. Bringing smiles to the faces of children supported by Make-A-Wish ® Greater Virginia brings great pride to the employees of Chartway FCU, who work year-round to make dreams come true for young heroes like Christopher. Since 1999, the credit union’s charitable arm has donated more than $2,300,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation ® of Greater Virginia.
“It is a privilege to support an organization with goals and aspirations that align with ours – to bring smiles to the faces of young heroes facing adult pain,” said Blum. “Being able to serve as a beacon of joy and hope for children like Chris battling hardship we could never imagine is what the We Promise Foundation is all about.”
Since Chartway Federal Credit Union’s charitable arm first began raising money to provide moments of magic to children battling life-threatening illnesses and severe hardship, it has successfully raised more than $4.5 million.
