Virginia Beach, VA (Dec. 24, 2013) – Throughout the month of December, Chartway Federal Credit Union and its divisions of HeritageWest and SouthWest Community Credit Unions worked hard to sprinkle holiday magic all across the country through numerous charitable drives.
From raising money to purchase gifts for nearly 600 children at an elementary school where 97% of the students live below the poverty line, to donating nearly 3,000 presents to the Toys for Tots program, delivering shoes, socks, and other necessities to struggling families, donating meals to local food banks, and more, this special season was made brighter thanks to the kindness and generosity of the family of credit unions.
Dedicated to making the “People Helping People” difference in the lives of its members, and the communities in which the organization serves, the Chartway family of credit unions helped delivered holiday cheer in the following ways:
» Donated 2,951 toys to the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.
» Through its “Christmas Wishes” program, raised money to purchase gifts for nearly 600 students at Lincoln Elementary – where 90% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and 75% are English language learners.
» Through its “Warm the Soles” donation drive, the credit union’s HeritageWest division donated socks and shoes to children in need.
» Through its “Angel Tree” collection drive, it collected gifts for families in need.
» Through its Annual Caroling event, 28 credit union employees brought holiday cheer to Hampton Roads-based organizations, including St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children.
» More than three-dozen credit union employees helped light up the night at the Downtown Norfolk Council’s Annual Grand Illumination Parade, serving as parade liaisons.
The credit union’s charitable foundation – the We Promise Foundation – also raised funds for children battling life-threatening illnesses, enabling it to donate $924,300 to charitable organizations who share its mission.
“I am so proud of our employees and our members, and deeply grateful to all those who believe in and support our culture of caring,” said Ron Burniske, president and CEO of Chartway Federal Credit Union and its division of HeritageWest and SouthWest Community. “Making a difference is at the heart of who we are. As I reflect back on the ways we have been able to do just that this holiday season and all year round, I am humbly reminded that there really is no place like this remarkable place. It’s a rare gift to be able to work with people who take every opportunity to do good, and carry the spirit of this season with them each and every day.”
